It was quite a time later that Grian went to knock softly on Lugh’s door. It was nearly at the three o’clock morning hour as Lugh, groggy and unkempt, swung the door open to answer her call. His shave was untidy, hair wild from sleep and his shirt, was, absent. Grian shifted her eyes away, but only for a brief moment, as her desire to steal a glance at him even partially nude overwhelmed her.
“Grian? What is it? Is everything alright?” He asked rubbing his eyes and doing nothing to mask the yawn that followed.
“I just cannot sleep.” She said to him. “For hours I have just rustled about back and forth and back and forth. It was just too torturous to continue to lay there so restless!” She exclaimed. “So here I am, arriving to disturb you, and, I am sorry, I should not have disturbed you like this.“
Instant regret washed over her and she was starting into quite a panic.
Lugh just stared with half opened eyes and grumbled his displeasure. “What’s done is done as I am now already disturbed.”
He shuffled to open the door further to allow her entry and Grian hesitantly took a step inside. She immediately took note of the room and that it was just as small as hers. Save for a bed, mirror, small chest of drawers and two chairs, there was nothing else to see really. She chose to sit in the chair that was corner to the bed.
Lugh closed the door shut behind him and lazily leaned his back against it as he shoved his hands nervously into his pockets and crossed one leg over the other. He felt it was just best to keep a safe physical distance from her for the moment. He seemed to have entirely forgotten, however, that he was still half in the nude.
Grian’s curiosity was peaking to ravenous levels now, and she bit the inside of her lip to try to contain her salacious thoughts.
It was only then that the same thought seemed to come to pass for Lugh. “Oh, sorry..” he mumbled in apology as he then moved to reach for a shirt to cover with.
She watched him put on the shirt and stared aptly as he slowly labored to set each of the buttons. When he finally looked up, after he was done, he inadvertently caught her eyes with his. Her gaze was incredibly arousing and Lugh fought to avert his own eyes to stare at anything else but her. However he was fully awake now.
“Do you know what today is?” She asked with sparkling green eyes looking up at him.
“Yes…” He answered, taking a hard, deep swallow.
He was now entirely focused on a stain in the carpet floor and for the life of him he would not look away from it.
“It is the second anniversary of your arrival on the island and, by process, that would mean you are at least eighteen years of age today.” He said it in a matter of fact tone, but in truth, it meant much, much more.
She rose from her seat and started towards him. As she got closer he stumbled backwards to keep the proper distance. This couldn’t happen no matter how much he desired it he thought. However as she continued toward him his defenses were wilting away one by one.
“Lugh…” Grian pleaded. She reached for his hand and ran the tips of her fingers over his rough, but warm and inviting, skin. He shivered at her touch and Grian smiled coyly at his reaction. She moved to gently tug at his arm to pull him closer to her. The warmth of their bodies so close together swelled her heart and electrified her body.
Grian could very well see now that Lugh yearned for her as much as she him and she hoped that meant he could not resist her advances. Her heart leapt in its chamber as he raised a nervous hand to her cheek and went to lightly stroke it. His forehead fell against hers and his eyes slid closed. He cherished the warmth of her touch and if they could stay in this moment forever he would be a very happy man.
“Kiss me, Lugh…” She continued to plead with him. Her blush lips were just inches from his now and she ran her tongue over to moisten them. The motion was all he could stand as he was no longer able to hold back for a second more. He dipped his head to lay his lips on hers in an incredibly tender but passionate kiss. They moved to deepen the kiss and their hunger for one another became insatiable. As she began to tug at his clothes Lugh suddenly pulled away from her leaving her absolutely bereft.
“What is it? What is the matter?” She asked. “Have I done something…wrong?”
“No, no. It is not that…” Lugh answered. He needed a moment to gather his senses with what was just about to happen.
He turned away and sat on the bed and sighed heavily. He looked up at her bewildered expression with sadness in his eyes and shook his head. “I owe it to Cael to not let this happen. I am sorry.” he said. “Please don’t be angry…”
She gave him a look that told him she wasn’t angry but she was very clearly disappointed. “I understand your loyalty to your brother but this is an awkward place for me to be. I have only ever really looked upon Cael as a dear brother and friend.”
“Aye. But he has never seen you that way. Not from the very first day. As I said before he was waiting for you to turn eighteen and…”
“But what would this mean for you and I now?” She asked him quite bluntly. “Surely Cael would never, ever approve…” Her voice trailed off as the impact of what she was saying jutted her quite good.
Lugh had no answer for her. He knew deep down that his brother was set to have his heart shattered by Grian, through no fault of her own. Nonetheless Cael was his blood family, his younger brother, and he had a duty to protect him.
She stood there and watched him struggling with his thoughts. Desperately hoping that he would tell her what she needed to hear.
He was not able to reassure her right away. It was not likely that he would have to push her away forever was it? The thought crushed him like a caveman’s club. Living without Grian in his world was not living it was simply existing.
Lugh was too exhausted and spent to think about these consequences now. He needed to just sleep.
“Why don’t we get some rest and talk about this afterwards?” He said. “Cael is due to arrive tomorrow as it stands.”
She was disappointed to say the least but what choice did she have really?
“Ok…but..”
She started to say something else but a change of heart kept her lips sealed. She wanted to stay, just to sleep beside him, but, as she was young, she certainly wasn’t naive. She would never expect a healthy, vital man to sleep next to her unsatisfied. Taking into account her own needs she knew she could very easily tempt him into something wickedly good. She momentarily gave it a serious thought but in the end she simply kissed him softly on the lips, bid him farewell and turned to leave.
He, in turn, did not want her to leave. However he also did not want to keep his hands away if she was to lay with him in his bed. What man could be expected to do that he silently asked himself? Echoing the very same thoughts that she had entertained just moments ago.
His heart did silently shatter as she looked back at him one final time before opening the door and quietly slipping out of the room.
Lugh had let her go and he had a horrible feeling that it was to be the biggest mistake of his life.
